The United States Cabinet is a component of the executive branch of the U.S. government. It is composed of the Vice President, the heads of the fifteen major executive departments, and other important officials of “Cabinet rank” as designated by the President. The Cabinet was established in Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, and its main function is to advise the President on matters related to each member’s area of responsibility. Some cabinet members also hold seats on the National Security Council, which is another statutory advisory body on matters related to national and international security.
Statutory members of the NSC include the President, the Vice President, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Energy. Other current members include the Director of the Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy, the Attorney General, the Secretary of the Interior, White House Chief of Staff, and the National Security Advisory as designated by the President.
Except for the Vice President and the White House Chief of Staff, all Cabinet members must be confirmed by a majority vote in the United States Senate. While the fifteen department heads make up the core of the Cabinet, the President may also promote other officials to Cabinet-level status, reflecting the priorities of different administrations. In the list below, Cabinet members are ordered according to when their departments were created, which is also the order of succession to the Presidency.
