In the United States, each of the 50 states has an Attorney General who serves as the chief legal officer of that state. The primary responsibilities of a state Attorney General include serving as the chief legal advisor to the state government, representing the state in litigation, defending state laws and the constitution, protecting consumer rights, investigating fraud and crimes of statewide significance, and overseeing law enforcement efforts in coordination with local prosecutors.
State Attorneys General are typically elected by voters in their respective states, though in a few states they are appointed by the governor or the state legislature. Like governors, term lengths and term limits vary according to each state's constitution. Most states have Attorneys General who serve four-year terms, while some states have two-year or six-year terms. Many states impose term limits on their Attorneys General, often limiting them to two consecutive terms before they must sit out or are barred from running again.
